Punta Manara Description.
This relaxing short trip, will not fail to amaze, with sights of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife that alternate continuously along the route.
Walking through the typical ligurian alleyways and narrow streets of Sestri Levante, passing stalls and shops along the way, one arrives at the beginning of the trail, marked by the FIE sign of two red filled squares, approximately halfway down the main street.
Initially, the path is steep but paved, climbing between houses, villas, gardens, vegetable allotments, orchards and olive groves, rewarding the walker with stunning views of the sea and town below. Once the wood is reached, the path softens, around the western side of Castle Mount (265m asl), dotted with many viewing points bestowing spectacular views over the Bay of Silence. A cocktail of colors in the form of houses aligning the beach and traditional fishing boats tethered to the shore, aesthetically frame this true pearl of the Tigullio Gulf
Just beyond the bay lies a green strip, suspended over the sea, where Guglielmo Marconi, often credited as the inventor of radio and known as the father of long distance radio transmission, successfully completed his first experiments on the use of marine radar.
This truly picturesque scene and marriage of man and the elements is completed by the addition of The Bay Of Fables, to the right of the promontory, so called by Hans Christian Andersen, who whilst residing in Sestri named it so. Along the path, from time to time, the odd bench can be found offering the walker respite and time for contemplation within these natural surroundings; there is no rush!
Continuing along the wooded coastal path the walker will finally arrive at the ruins of a once Saracen Tower, which can be visited by climbing a short yet steep stone staircase.
From here the walker can about turn and retrace easily the path back to Sestri, or continue anti-clock wise, following a long loop. In doing so the opportunity arises at certain points to go on to Riva Trigoso and beyond if so desired.
