Punta Manara, trekking and panorama

Here is a grate walk that can be done either in the morning to incorporate a lazy picnic lunch at the Punta, or later in the afternoon so you still have plenty of time to wander around Sestri.

The route is linear there and back to the picturesque Punta Manara. Situated right at the tip of the promontory, the Punta is now a protected nature reserve-as such, it is only accessible on foot- and boasts superb views over the Gulf of Tigullio.

The route is steep in places, but you are rewarded with sea views throughout.

How to make the excursion from our hotel

Turn right out of the Grande Albergo and continue along Via Vittorio Veneto for 100mt into Lungomare Giovanni Descalzo, then turn right to walk through the park. Turn right again into Viale Giuseppe Mazzini. Continue for approx 100mt to the roundabout Piazza Sant Antonio. Pass the tourist office and cross Viale XX Settembre; with Caffeè Bocchia on the corner, turn right into Corso Colombo.

Go to the endo of Corso Colombo (100mt) and continue straight ahead; the road is now Via XXV Aprile and is narrower and pedestranised.

Continue for approx. 150m, to a little arched alleyway with a “t” for Tabacchi sign, on the left. This is Vico del Bottone and is signposted Punta Manara.

Turn Left under the archway and take an immediate right up “Salita Mandrealla” also signed (in the form of an arrow on the wall) for Punta Manara. Continue up the brick and stone path; after 300m, you pass the Hotel Vis a Vis.

Continue along the same path, uphill, with a stone wall on your right and a small wood on your left. The path eventually levels out, going past some houses bordered by olive trees. The path climbs again after the last 2 houses on the right, past a view point, before the pretty Mandrella houses.

Just after the Mandrella houses, turn right at the fork, heading uphill, signed “Punta Manara, 35”. There are initially some steep steps carved out of the rock that lead to a bench – ideally placed for Panoramic views over Sestri’s Baia del Silenzio.

Continue along the main path, passing Mediterranean pine and cork oak trees, as it undulates through the valley, ignoring any side turnings of until you reach a clearing

with fork. The main path is waymarked with 2 red circles, but we leave the main path here, and turn right, heading towards the small Forestry Commission’s house with 2 picnic tables and well in front of it.

Climb the 30 steep steps up to the picturesque Punta Manara. There are superb views from the ruins of the medieval Saracen lookout tower here (at 140m above sea level)

When you are ready to head back, retrace your steps back to Sestri Levante

Enjoy your trekking
