Today we want to introduce you the colorful village of Portovenere, as an easy daily excursion from our hotel.
The village overlooks the Gulf of La Spezia and owes its name to the temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Erice, located where today stands the church of San Pietro. The name was probably linked to the fact that, according to tradition, the goddess was born from the foam of the sea, abundant just below that promontory.
The small historical center of the village is full of shops and restaurants where you can spend pleasant hours enjoying the unique landscapes in the world.
In front of Portovenere you can see the Isola Palmaria that, besides being a pearl from the naturalistic point of view for its rich Mediterranean vegetation, has also beautiful beaches all along the perimeter.
From Sestri Levante we recommend you to go to Portovenere by public transport because the road to get in by car is very narrow and busy, especially during the summer season, so starting from our hotel you have 2 options:
The boat of Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio, that leaves directly from the ferry pier of Sestri Levante, about 400 meters far from our hotel. The tour includes a 1-hour stop in Monterosso and 3 hours in Portovenere, the return is late in the afternoon. The service is available on Sundays from June to September and leaves at 9:50 am, the cost per person is € 29.50 for the round trip. Of course it is subject to sea conditions
The train from Sestri Levante to La Spezia, during the summer trains depart about every 45 minutes and cost € 4.70 per person each way, once you arrive in La Spezia you have to reach the ferry pier that is 1km far from the train station and is very well marked, then you will use the boat of Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti at 9:15, 10:00, 11:15, 12:15. You’ll reach Portovenere in about 30 minutes. The cost per round trip is € 10.00 per person. Contrary to the service running from Sestri Levante you can use the boat from La Spezia every day from March to October. Alternatively, in case of bad sea condition or during the winter, you can use the public bus that leaves directly from the station and in about 1 hour will take you to Portovenere, the cost is € 2.50 per person each way and the line is 11p.
We wish you a good day and hope you’ll find our info useful!
