The Piazza del Duomo and the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Piazza del Duomo, the true artistic and touristic heart of Pisa, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
It houses the four monuments that form the core of the city’s attractions: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo, and the famous Tower.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, located in the renowned Piazza del Duomo, is the city’s most famous monument, known worldwide for its characteristic tilt — a symbol of Pisa and one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks.
It is a freestanding bell tower, about 56 meters high and weighing 14,453 tons.
The tower currently leans at 5° from the vertical axis, yet remains in perfect balance because the vertical line passing through its center of gravity still falls within its base.
Known as the Leaning Tower or Tower of Pisa, it once played an active role in marking both human and divine time through its seven bells, corresponding to the seven musical notes. The largest bell, cast in 1655, weighs about three and a half tons!
The tower is world-famous for the beauty of its architectural design, its unique inclination, which makes it a true miracle of balance, and its setting within the celebrated Piazza dei Miracoli, of which it is undoubtedly the jewel.
From our Hotel Grande Albergo (4 stars) in Sestri Levante, Pisa can be reached in about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car or train.
